LROC (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera)

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is in its lunar orbit since July 2009. The LROC wide angle camera (WAC) onboard the LRO spacecraft provided image data of about 75 m/pxl ground resolution from an average orbit altitude of 50 km. The WAC swath width is 70 km. There is significant overlap between WAC images from adjacent orbits. Thus, within each month of the LRO mission, WAC stereo images of the entire lunar surface are acquired. We used DLR's stereo-photogrammetric processing system for the derivation of an almost global lunar digital terrain model with 100 m grid spacing, the "GLD100". This new model consists of a combination of about 69,000 WAC stereo models and about 100 billion 3D surface points. It covers the lunar surface from 79°S to 79°N (polar areas are excluded because of poor illumination and stereo conditions at high latitudes). More information will be provided soon.

High Resolution Surface models and ortho-rectified images of US and Russian Lunar landing sites are computed to accurately locate instruments with respect to the global reference as these can be used for detailed analyzes.

The table below lists all current available reduced data sets in PDS format.

The DEM is combined from four single stereo models derived from LROC NAC images M104311715 (left / right) and M104318871 (left / right). Pixel resolution is 1.5 m/pixel with forward ray intersection accuracies ranging from +/- 0.8 m to +/- 3.6 m. DN values in the provided PDS file represent the heights above the Lunar reference sphere of 1737.4 km radius. Elevations are tied to heights derived from the LOLA instrument. TUB/ I. The DEM is combined from four single stereo models computed from LROC NAC images M177426582 (left / right) and M177433351 (left / right). Initial pixel resolution is 1.5 m/pixel with forward ray intersection accuracies ranging from +/- 1.1 m to +/- 3.5 m. To match the ortho-image size and resolution the DEM was re-sampled to a pixel resolution of 0.5 m/pixel (as provided). TUB/ I. Haase Apr. 2013 V1.0
